The Myanmar Red Cross Society is deeply concerned by reports that many organizations and individuals are displaying the Red Cross emblem in association with their efforts to assist victims of the recent cyclone.
The Red Cross is used by national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the world as a means of identification and protection. Its use is governed by the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and other international regulations. All national societies must confirm to the seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross proclaimed in 1965, which specifies among other things that assistance be given without discrimination. National societies are also required to be strictly neutral and to be autonomous to the extent that they can at all times act in accordance with these principles.
''We encourage the citizens of Myanmar to respond to the needs of the victims of the cyclone in whatever way they can, and warmly welcome their efforts and helps to disaster affected people'' said Prof. Dr. Tha Hla Shwe, President of the Myanmar Red Cross Society. ''But please do not confuse people as to your identity."
The Red Cross is often confused as a symbol for first aid, medical centers and humanitarian aid in general, whereas it's use is strictly regulated.
"We are very concerned that some people using the Red Cross without authorization may act in a way that will discredit Myanmar Red Cross, which has worked hard over many years to build trust among the people of this country." stated Prof. Dr. Tha Hla Shwe. "That trust can be undone in a matter of minutes" he said.
Myanmar Red Cross Society is appealing for people to voluntarily cease the misuse of a protected symbol.
